Kidney Stones

Usually occurring between the ages of 20 and 40, once a person develops a kidney stone, they are more likely to get them in the future. Caucasians are more likely to get them than African Americans and men more than women. Symptoms include sharp pain in the back, side or abdomen, nausea, vomiting, and burning sensation during urinating. It usually takes between one and three weeks to pass a kidney stone. In some cases, just letting your urologist know what’s happening is enough. Other times, patients can receive pain medication or opt to have surgical treatment to break up a large stone.
