Incontinence

Keeping track of the nearest bathroom is a way of life for millions of Americans with incontinence. There are different types of incontinence, including:
  • Stress - occurs while coughing, laughing or during physical activity such as exercise. This is due to the abdominal muscles tightening and forcing urine out of the bladder. Patients who have recently had surgery or x-ray treatment may also experience stress incontinence.

  • Urge - if you find that the urge to use the bathroom and leaking occur at almost the same time, you may have urge incontinence. By the time the urge is felt, there is usually not enough time to make it to the bathroom. It can happen when you hear water running, or when you touch water, as in hearing someone else take a shower, or washing your hands.

  • Overflow - bladder that constantly remains full causes overflow incontinence. Weak bladder muscles or a blocked urethra can cause this type of incontinence. Nerve damage from diabetes or other diseases can lead to weak bladder muscles. Tumors and urinary stones can block the urethra. Overflow incontinence is rare in women.
