Bedwetting

Between five and seven million children wet the bed on a regular basis. Bladder control is usually learned between the ages of two and four, but for some children, it is a struggle. Bedwetting is twice as common with boys as it is with girls, but daytime wetting occurs more often with girls. If both parents wet the bed during their childhood, the odds increase greatly in their children.

Several factors contribute, such as small bladder capacity, falling into a deep sleep, or underdevelopment of the body’s internal alarm system that alerts the child of the need to go to the bathroom. Behavior modifications can improve the situation, as well as medications to help treat the problem. These, combined with compassion and an understanding of the difficulty, can help children have dry nights.
